There is no national calendar. There are seventy-eight.

When the regional and national rounds stopped being held after ครั้งที่ 70, the single published schedule went with them. Every สำนักงานเขตพื้นที่การศึกษา now sets its own dates and announces them on its own website, usually four to six weeks ahead and often only in Thai.

So we check them and write them down. Below is everything we have confirmed by reading an official district announcement ourselves, the full list of all 78 offices so you can find which one your school belongs to, and the fastest way to get your own date out of your school.

Dates we have read ourselves

Six entries. That is not many out of 78, and we are not going to pad it. An empty row means an office has not announced, not that it is not running — nearly all of them run between August and March.

The fastest route

How to find your own date in ten minutes

  1. Ask the school first. The announcement arrives at your school as a letter, usually to ฝ่ายวิชาการ or the head of the foreign languages department (หัวหน้ากลุ่มสาระการเรียนรู้ภาษาต่างประเทศ). They will know the date before any website does. This is also the only way to be entered, so you have to have the conversation anyway.
  2. Search in Thai, not English. Type your office name and the edition number together: ศิลปหัตถกรรมนักเรียน ครั้งที่ 74 สพป.สุรินทร์ เขต 2. English searches return almost nothing.
  3. Check the office's Facebook page. Most education service areas post the schedule there before it reaches their website, and it is usually a photograph of the letter.
  4. Look on vichakan.net, not sillapa.net. Editions 71 to 74 moved. Almost every district now has a page at art74.vichakan.net/sp-[code] for primary offices and /sm-[code] for secondary. Real examples in use now: sp-kkn2 (ขอนแก่น 2), sp-udn2 (อุดรธานี 2), sp-ret3 (ร้อยเอ็ด 3), sp-snk2 (สกลนคร 2). If the page 404s, that district has not opened its site yet.

You cannot enter your own child. The school enters the child, through its own login, with a named coaching teacher on the entry form. If a website offers to register your child directly for งานศิลปหัตถกรรมนักเรียน, it is not the real thing.

Which office does your school belong to

Isan has 61 primary offices (สำนักงานเขตพื้นที่การศึกษาประถมศึกษา, สพป.) and 17 secondary offices (มัธยมศึกษา, สพม.), covering somewhere around twelve to thirteen thousand schools — OBEC publishes school counts per district, so that total is our own estimate. Primary schools compete under their สพป.; secondary schools under their สพม. Three secondary offices cover two provinces each, which is why 17 offices cover 20 provinces.

This table is our working list, assembled from OBEC's own office listings. If a line is wrong — and on a list this long one probably is — tell us and we will fix it and say that we did.

What happens on the day

So you are not surprised

Story Telling is judged out of 100 points, and sixty of them are the English: vocabulary and structure 20, pronunciation 20, voice and expression 20. The story itself is worth 35 and timekeeping 5. If you are coaching a child, that tells you where the hours go.

OBEC's criteria set three age bands: ป.4–6 five to six minutes; ม.1–3 six to seven; ม.4–6 seven to eight. Some districts also run a ป.1–3 event and some do not — check your own district's list. Thirty seconds either side is free; after that it is one point a minute out of the five for timing.

Five printed copies of the script go to the judges one day before the competition, not on the day itself. This is the most common way to lose a place before saying a word. No notes on stage, no props, no costume, no phone, no music. School uniform.

Medals go by score, not by rank: 80 and above is gold, 70–79 silver, 60–69 bronze. Several children in the same room can all take gold, and often do.
